How we do it

Our research has uncovered one Trust generating more than £200 million in ‘other operating income’ in 2022/23, whilst some Trusts report virtually nothing.  

Clearly this may be an extreme example, but in our opinion Trusts up and down the country are literally leaving money on the table by not addressing the opportunities from this important issue.


How we define NHS commercial income 


We broadly classify ‘NHS commercial income’ as ‘other operating income’ in your consolidated statement of comprehensive income.


We consider NHS commercial income encompasses six main areas:

•  Overseas Visitors

•  Services to Private Hospitals

•  Other clinical support services


2.     Intellectual property related:

•  Commercialising intellectual property

•  Commercial Research including clinical trials

4.  Consultancy


5.  Commercial Facilities Management and non-clinical support services


6.   Property and estates related:

•  Retail

•  Tech hubs

•  Advertising

•  Car parking

How we can help you…


We have developed a new product called the Commercial Income Portal, or CINC for short.


Using CINC we would work with you to examine your current levels of commercial income and benchmark you against English Trusts of a similar size and type.  


In summary our CINC review will: 

·  Identify the current level of commercial income received by your Trust

·  Highlight how this compares against the expected or potential level of income based on a benchmarked analysis of other similar Trusts

·  Identify specific opportunities for increasing commercial income (or not)

·  Prepare an outline action plan, suggesting how these additional opportunities could be achieved. 

·  Summarise the findings and recommendations in a clear and comprehensive report in a form you can share with your Trust Board and Executive Team. 


The cost of this work is  £9,750 + VAT. 


As a minimum the work will provide your Trust Board with the assurance that you have reviewed this important area on a structured, objective and informed basis and are doing all you can you optimise your position. 


However, in addition to this, our expectation is that we will find opportunities to generate more money for you with little or no impact on your current day-to-day operations. marketplace.
